Songs for the Girls in India

The residential girls school in India has asked us to teach "protest songs." At this school, there is a strong sense of empowerment through literacy, skill development, and Hindu and English learning.

The girls already know "If I had a hammer" and are quite fond of the Hokey Pokey!

Here are seven songs we're planning on teaching.

This little light of mine
Gonna keep on moving forward
Siyahamba
Freedom is coming
Come and go with me to that land
Kwaheri
Dear friend

David is composing songs just for the girls - one already written will make its debut at Columbine UU Church on January 30:
Gonna rise up singing

We're taking poster-sized word sheets for the songs, translations into Marathi, photos and pictures to describe the words and concepts. David had quite a time finding an image to represent "Hide it under a bushel."

Please comment with your thoughts on other songs that these girls should learn!
